Mechanical Engineer

Hercules Propellers Ltd

Specialise in the design and manufacture and repair of aeroplane propellers for a range of historic aircraft such as the Tiger Moth, Spitfire and Mustang. 

Hercules are keen to recruit an experienced mechanical engineer to lead the department which services and overhauls variable pitch propellers for customers around the world. 

The role involves the following tasks: 

• Co-ordinating the processes involved in each propeller overhaul.
• Disassembly and cleaning of propellers for overhaul inspection.
• Visual inspection of parts for wear and damage.
• Accurate measurement of parts to check for compliance with maintenance data.

• Identifying the new parts required for rebuild of the propeller. 

• Occasional zinc-nickel plating of parts which require re-plating. 

• Propeller blade overhaul, including sanding of blades for painting, frequency check and static balance. 

• Propeller assembly. 

• Upkeep of paperwork records for each overhaul. 

• Supervision of assistants. 

• Ensuring the overhaul workshop is kept tidy. 

As in any small company, the role may expand to cover other aspects of the business, subject to the candidate having the appropriate skills and inclination to get involved. 

A successful candidate will have the following skills 

• Sound mechanical engineering knowledge. 

• Practical hands-on engineering skills. 

• Ability to read and understand technical data, manuals, drawings, specifications. 

• Experienced in measurement of component parts using a wide variety of inspection gauges such as vernier, micrometer and height Gauges. 

• Motivated and ambitious with a desire to be part of a growing team in an interesting field.
• Past experience in the aerospace sector will be an advantage although not a necessity.


The role is full time. Full specific training will be given. Based in Stroud, Gloucestershire
Ideally looking for a careful, conscientious perfectionist with an interest in heritage engineering. 

From £19.50 per hour (£40,560 p.a.) to £21.50 per hour (£44,720 p.a.) depending on experience. 40 hour week.
